In this scenario, how would a 16yr old boy refusing to walk through the #knifearch, or turning around and walking away, be dealt with?https://twitter.com/MPSTowerHam/status/1042800147615375361 …

I resisted pressure to use knife arches. I was never convinced of their effectiveness and, even before social media saturation, I viewed them as s publicity stunt encouraged by SMT to give the impression that something was being done.

We have had some v positive results with them in the past. Like the old CUBO, sometimes felt a bit ethically awkward personally, but I couldn't argue with the number of bad people stopped.

I expect, with the advent of social media, WhatsApp group messaging & the like, the location of knife arches would be shared amongst criminals within hours, if not minutes. The cyber equivalent of motorists flashing headlights near speed traps. Displacement not reduction.

Sure, but we know the effect of displacement is generally over-estimated - opportunity often drives the crime. Drivers might slow down for speed cameras then keep speeding, but not convinced gang members just go stab people elsewhere if we disrupt them at a specific location.

I don’t think knife carrying is an opportunist crime.

So how do we stop people from carrying in the first place, whilst reducing incidents of use from those who do? #KnifeCrime

Rich, asking the big questions :P I totally see both sides. But I think there is a good argument that arches can be used to target harden and disrupt, especially around key dates/places that may attract violence.

That’s when s.60 should be used - as a result of intelligence that violence in a particular location/area is anticipated - using officers (if there are any) to search everyone. Far more dynamic (mobile) and effective.
