I’m chiefly concerned about ensuring the safety of women and girls against male violence, to be honest.

Brian, it’s not just that. It’s about comfort, peace of mind, dignity and privacy. Not having “woman/girl/female ” forcibly redefined by males to mean nothing. No more right to feel relaxed, comfortable amongst females where we feel vulnerable.

Ironically I’ve met many transgender women who transitioned because they didn’t feel comfortable, have peace of mind, feel relaxed around men. They wanted to be more accepted by other women by becoming a woman. And most say the majority of women accept them as such.

The majority of women probably stay quiet out of fear. We know they’re men. We don’t know how they will react if anything is said. So we shut up and leave them to it. Don’t mistake silence for acceptance please.

"Most say the majority of women...." We can all do that Brian. Unless you've conducted a poll, you are no more in a position to call this than anyone else.

We should all do that. I’m not saying your opinion is not valid. I’m just pointing out, in the absence of a comprehensive survey, I should say “in my experience” or “in my opinion” rather than state “most men think”. I think we agree. I’m sorry if the way I expressed it was wrong

Your response was incredibly dismissive and you know it. Having spoken to many women I can tell you whilst most will accept someone they know personally, the presence a male stranger in a space where they are vulnerable and in a state of undress is completely different.

This is Twitter. I’m responding to hundreds of tweets as I’m the only one engaging. I apologise if my shorthand caused offence. It was not intended and I did not realise it would cause the reaction it did. You have to make allowances. I’m a man but I’m not a misogynist.

In which case you should be speaking out about schools having totally overridden safeguarding measures to be Inclusive. Speak to this mother who was called transphobic because she objected to this.pic.twitter.com/jYdoeEFRyD

Yep. And yet the school and local authority deemed the parents transphobic for complaining about it. If the safety of women and girls is what you are concerned about, shouldn't you be wondering why schools are completely overriding safeguarding to allow this to happen?

I would also add a concern on female sporting ambitions and achievements being destroyed by allowing males to compete against them.

My mother would also be mortified at a physical examination by a male if she had requested a woman. A lot of the older generation want female only hospital wards at time they are vulnerable and they need dignity and privacy. Their needs should not be less than the male feelings.

I am concerned that girls need for privacy and dignity is being over-ridden by a male's need to identify as a girl and access their spaces. I have teenage daughters. It's a time of change and high embarrassment, periods and confusion. They need female only spaces.

I am also concerned that data collection is distorted by the reporting, for example, of crime being committed by females when the offenders are born males.

We also need basic peace of mind in going about our daily business. For years trans women used womens spaces, the women in question tend to evict the 'tourists' pretty quickly. Trans who are genuinely living as women are generally untroubled. Stating "I'm a woman" isn't enough

Why did you tell me this was not a safeguarding issue, then, Brian, and then go on to accuse me of being “condescending” when I pointed out that if it isn’t, it really, urgently, should be? Have you changed your mind on this issue? Why?
