If people are pushed towards starting the debate under the unproven and unprovable premise that “transwomenare women” then it is impossible for all of those who will be affected to debate without prejudice.

You are using figures from 2010, Brian, which are drastically out of date. The 2011 census showed 2,706,066 Muslims in the UK, while more recent Pew research shows that the size of Muslim population in 2016 was 6.3% of the UK population (which was 65.348m in 2016) i.e. 4,116,924.
-
The 2016 figure for Muslim women *alone* was therefore c. 2.06m. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/11/29/5-facts-about-the-muslim-population-in-europe/ … Given that the Muslim population will increase exponentially faster than other demographics, even with no further migration, and that a larger proportion of Muslim women on average
-
are in the age band of higher fertility, 2.5m is not an unreasonable projection for 2019/20, which is when I would expect sex self-ID to take force. http://www.pewforum.org/2017/11/29/europes-growing-muslim-population/ … I’ve no idea why you’re mentioning Asian women in sport - perhaps in response to someone else’s comments?
-
Apologies so your figures are based on your projection of the female Muslim population when you estimate the GRA changes will come into force. And what public participation are they going to be prevented from entering into? And what assumptions are you making about Muslim women?
-
Many muslim women take off their hijab in the mirror/washbasin area of female public toilets to tidy themselves up in the presence of other women. Making toilets mixed sex (gender-neutral) means they can no longer freely use these spaces.
-
There is nothing in the proposed changes to the GRA about public toilets or who can use them or changing them from single sex.
-
However, mixed sex (gender neutral) toilets and spaces are popping up all over the place in anticipation of self-id. Many formerly women's only spaces are being renamed 'gender neutral' to accomodate everyone. Because women are so accomodating.
-
And there appears to be great confusion over who can and who can't use women's toilets, e.g. in this BBC article that last paragraph appear to me to be saying that this pub was acting illegally.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-39415622 …

The Muslim population was higher than that according to the 2011 census and it is growing quickly (Est 3 mill 2014) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_the_United_Kingdom#Demographics … Not all Muslims are Asian and vice versa. And Hattie made no mention of sport.
-
I think 2.6m is the 2014 figure for England because in 2011 whole UK = 2.7m. Can't see total UK at 2.6m anywhere? It is an interesting link though. 50% more white women than Asian women participate in sport & one of the reasons they give for this is lack of single sex spaces.

“We've learned from so many mistakes in the past that women are at a greater risk of sexual assault and violence if they don’t have separate bathrooms,” says Amnesty International. Yet the UK, which advises the world on women's rights, wants to scrap this.https://qz.com/692711/the-radically-simple-way-to-make-female-refugees-safer-from-sexual-assault-decent-bathrooms/ …

Unbelievable.

I was about to say exactly the same.
-
Exactly. The article is from 2016 and the comment from the deputy director for Europe and Central Asia, but it's astonishing how quickly institutional wisdom, let alone basic common sense, is being unravelled. Harm to women is just collateral damage for this male rights movement.

Okay then, what about the smaller number of muslim women Brian? Worried about their daughters using gender free toilets at schools/colleges .... these concerns matter Brian. Women matter. Why are we being asked to give up our protections against violence and abuse? Help us!

@brianpaddick, am re-engaging as I see the conversation is still running. The other day you chose to quibble with me over a disputed figure rather than answer my serious questions in the tweets above yours and this one. Have you had any thoughts on these?https://twitter.com/MadamBiro/status/1014911582118260738 …Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
