I give up my seat to little kids. They are more unsteady in their feet, often over whelmed by crowded public transport, lots of big bodies standing over them. I'm happy for little kids to feel safer on my seat while I stand. I do the same for the elderly & pregnant.

why on earth would fit healthy able adults not want to give up their seat to a young child on busy public transport? there's such a disturbing culture towards children in this country. can't we just try to look after them/ help the parents
-
And if you see a little baby you should pull a funny face to make it smile. And if a kid waves from a car wave back. My kids' day is made by this stuff.

I must have been more than a small child otherwise I wouldn’t have remembered it. Babies & I seem to have a connection. We nearly always seem to make eye contact & smile at each other. Maybe we recognise vulnerability in each other? Respect to all parents - huge responsibility.
-
I remember my mum slapping my legs too to get me to give up my seat. FWIW I'd expect my teen to stand.

I think this taps into the idea that the young should respect their elders no matter what. Something that I vehemently disagree with.

As a fit and strong forty-something, I am far more capable than a child of dealing with lurching buses.

I thought this till I had a daily journey w/ small tired child on crowded bus, w/ baby in sling. Journey was 100 x easier if someone gave him seat. If I'd had access to a car, I'd have driven instead of taking bus daily. That would have meant 1 more car on road chucking out CO2.

Adults who are fit and well are usually better able to remain upright on public transport. I give up my seat for children

West Mids buses used to have a sign “Children traveling at reduced fare should not occupy seats while adults are standing.”

I always give up my seat for children, like the old they get tired quickly.
-
absolutely. how any one could possibly watch a tired, probably nervous child on tube/ bus and not want to let them sit down is beyond me

In my view this is because Its now so busy on transport such as the tube it’s safer for children to sit.

As a bloke of 60+ I find the children around here generally give up their seats for me when I travel by bus

I don’t know, but my daughter stood for a disabled man on the train the other day, if that makes you feel better?

And in London the adult has usually paid for a seat and the child hasn't (free fares for under 16).

Small kids fall over easily on the tube. Adults can hold onto railings. Carrying children is exhausting.
