It seems to me that the problem springs from the conflation of two separate debates, which would perhaps be better discussed in isolation from each other.

Firstly, how can we work towards and ensure that all trans people are afforded human rights and treated decently. That is an important conversation, and one where it is right that no objections should be raised. It affects nobody but trans people.

The second debate is more contentious and is the point where silencing of certain voices seems unreasonable to me. This is the debate regarding whether some men should be afforded women’s rights, and if yes, then how far should that extend.

This is a far more nuanced debate and it is essential that all people affected should be part of the discussion.

This seems like emotive language, designed with the express purpose of quelling the voices of those who assert that despite advances in medicine, it is not literally possible to change sex.

If people are pushed towards starting the debate under the unproven and unprovable premise that “transwomenare women” then it is impossible for all of those who will be affected to debate without prejudice.

The use of that phrase to frame the whole debate also suggests that the speaker is in no way impartial and unlike you, is not likely to take an objective and balanced approach.

If I have wholly misunderstood, and only human rights were being discussed, I am happy to be corrected. But I feel it is essential that we can define these issues clearly. If the two sides claim “woman” means different things, all debate must necessarily be at cross-purposes.

Brian, I appreciate your attempts to listen, but you perhaps cannot hear the dogwhistle misogyny women hear when the words "[transgender] inclusion, rights and services" are juxtaposed with "no debate". I hear an incursionary push into female space, with all objections silenced.

Neither of us were at the meeting but I have the advantage of knowing @LizBarkerLords. Liz is trying her level best to manage what has become a very volatile situation. Trans people suffer appalling prejudice & discrimination & also need safe spaces to discuss their own issues.

Hi Brian, I think we can agree on the need for safe spaces. Unfortunately I think a key reason that this has become a volatile situation is that women are being told we must cede ours, and the language we use to discuss ourselves is being forbidden.

The big question in the minds of most women is "Why should someone who until 10 years ago would have been called a transvestite or pre-op MtF TS be granted automatic access to female-only spaces and a female birth certificate as a solution to men's alleged hostility to them?"

I see no evidence that trans people in the UK suffer more "appalling prejudice and discrimination" than women and think we need to compare hard facts before making any decisions that diminish women's rights or alter the balance of rights vis-à-vis other protected characteristics.

Why don't men campaign to make male spaces safer for those who identify as feminine, if (as has yet to be proved) these places are dangerous? Why are men's loos not being made unisex? Why are men not giving up jobs & resources to empower MtF TSs? Why do trans rights = women lose?

Why should 2.5m Muslim women stop participating in public life because female-only spaces will become mixed-sex if any man can claim he's female? Why should 6m disabled/learning-disabled women who need same-sex privacy for toileting lose independence because males are there?

So rather than make male spaces safer for transwomen, women are expected to share their spaces. How is this not throwing women under the bus? We are expected to share with males, men do not give up anything. How is this fair?

Trans don't experience seixism bc people know that they are not natal women. Trans experience issues bc people may not accept transgender folks, but they certainly are not experiencing sexism as women experience sexism. They are not seen as the same as women.
