The problem here - and this is widespread so not a personal dig - is treating diverse groups of people, that happen to be using the same mode of transport, as if they had a collective responsibility for each others' actions. As elsewhere in life, this is Not Okay.

There are two "stories". Small one: some road users are inconsiderate idiots. It's not news. Bigger story: hundreds of cyclists are killed or seriously injured every year, and not by other cyclists! But there's a solution, policing is important but mostly it's infrastructure.
-
But that won't stop you spewing out tweets that imply every single cyclist is a lawbreaking danger on the roads, right? FFS

Yeah, except you didn't delete the tweet that started it all. That's still doing the rounds and creating a very negative, victim-blaming impression. You did the equivalent of The Sun printing a correction weeks after they printed thw lie

Thanks for the advice. I’ll try that & see what happens.

Cyclists are more law abiding than drivers: https://www.outsideonline.com/2273001/cyclists-comply-traffic-laws-more-drivers … Cyclists are more careful than drivers due to risk compensation, and cyclists have far better road safety knowledge than drivers. http://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/latest-news/cyclists-beat-drivers-road-safety-survey-146059 … The facts don't really fit with your tweets, Brian.

Take it you've never seen many of the TV programs lauding car ownership and encouraging risk taking and dangerous driving then. Plenty of them to choose from, from Top Gear to Fast & Loud and even one titled Street Outlaws :-( 1800 people KILLED every year in UK by motorists....
-
Unfortunately utterings like yours that encourage the demonisation of out groups, as if that didn't happen enough already, do not help the situation. Instead they add fuel to the fires of the haters who are all too prevalent on here "all cyclists are scum" etc.

No - that is not the "trouble". The trouble is that ONLY the occasional "high profile etc" advocating for cyclists gets a hearing, while the ^entire rest of the media^ consciously or subconsciously puts the POV of the motor lobby.

Brian, let's get the government on-board first. See thread linked below:https://twitter.com/JonIrwinLD/status/1002150886364340224 …

Brian. This is a highly car-centric society. TV programmes created just for motorists. Extremely expensive adverts for flash cars speeding down open roads. One individual does not begin to redress the imbalance.

That sounds like a kind of false 'balance'. There's a huge, endemic problem of people being killed or injured on the road every day, almost *always* through the use of *one* particular mode of transport. To pretend otherwise isn't to address the problem.
