Some DDoS skid added me to a 1337 hax0r Twitter group chat. I've finally reached the point of internet popularity that I had hoped I would never reach.

there are countless skids out there -- and a few who are just bitter they've never been written about -- that are so desperate for attention/affirmation. It's probably the main reason they got involved in it to begin with, if they're honest/aware.

when you respond, they show it off to all their skid friends as proof they have industry cred. this *just* happened with Antichrist, the guy who fronted for the Loser Squad. DM'd me after the Mirai sentencing all "lol" I just ignored him.

Yeah I used to have to deal with the Gator Squad kids every month or two... I wish they realized that industry cred comes with a lot less jail time if you do it the right way.

I never understood the threat actors wanting attention thing. They could easily gain attention with multiple year campaigns and never speak a word to anyone. Instead they become obsessed with socializing and broadcasting their exploits.

By having regular communications with others and sharing details about themselves all they do is chip away at their anonymity and make an indictment/sentence that much closer. It doesn't really make sense to me.

While I understand "fame/reputation" in the underground gets them access to more advanced and complex threat actors and their tools/ideas. If they were smart they would do it all themselves and learn from the mistakes of others.

It's short-term mentality I think. Most government/advanced threat actors are focused on multi-year campaigns in most cases (with notable outliers) while a lot of the headlining blackhat stories are smash and grab with large, short-term gains.

Think payment processor breaches or PoS malware campaigns. If you maintain access to those platforms for a long time period, you're talking millions+ cards per day.

However, because of advances in CPP (common point of purchase) analysis, the second you try to monetize a breach, you're screwed. The hunt begins as soon as the cards are offered for sale, and breach discovery happens pretty quickly after the hunt begins.

Exactly, and again even when people try to monitize it all they do is paint a target on themselves by multiple governments and the companies involved. The smarter way would be for them to siphon that data then utilize the captured data themselves so actual impact isnt public.
