In Jan 2017, I named 2 men as the likely authors of Mirai, an IoT botnet strain that clobbered countless sites, including a massive attack on my site. On Tuesday, both men and 1 other were each sentenced to 5 yrs probation, community service and fines https://krebsonsecurity.com/2018/09/mirai-botnet-authors-avoid-jail-time/ …pic.twitter.com/zSSnlTmCHU

Funny how you claim all the fame, however everyone with the right sense of mind knows it was erik (9gigsofram) that had them fucked.

Err....actually, my initial Jan 2017 story about the Mirai authors referenced Erik and his colleague repeatedly. I even included a lengthy chat record between Paras and Proxypipe's Coelho. https://krebsonsecurity.com/2017/01/who-is-anna-senpai-the-mirai-worm-author/ …

Not attempting to critique general concept, just asking about this specific case because cyber seems tricky to assess. May well be appropriate but I find these cases difficult to get a fix on because they are not always transparent.

I think at a high level, this is probably the best outcome out of many. At a deeper emotional level, this doesn't feel like justice.

Thanks. I share that sense of unease balanced with knowing it may be as good as it gets. Appreciate your reporting in security.

Remind me again if this was somewhat of a prank against gamers that went way off the rails ... why did they target you? Did you ever get an explanation? Guessing that would be hard to claim was an accident.

They claimed it was someone renting their botnet who was upset over my reporting on vDOS, which preceded by a few hours the arrest of those responsible for running vDOS. See: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2017/01/who-is-anna-senpai-the-mirai-worm-author/ … and https://krebsonsecurity.com/2016/09/alleged-vdos-proprietors-arrested-in-israel/ …

Ah thanks. So they were also making money renting it out.

...and they flipped. What was really crazy about this story is it started with them wanting to cheat in Minecraft hunger games I think it was.
