Partly I argue that drugs already used for other things - like depression, even birth control - have unintended side effects for relationships that are not properly studied bc western medicine focuses on individual symptoms not relational contexthttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/294428485_Love_drugs_why_scientists_should_study_the_effects_of_pharmaceuticals_on_human_romantic_relationships …
Very interesting article - thanks. Made me wonder about maternal love & the oxytocin high post birth where there may be many potential risks/ benefits... I note you discourage the use of the term 'love drugs' in appendix, so maybe it is a sales issue?
I’ve flagged the maternal love issue for further research - I agree it’s very intersting and worth looking into. I’m ambivalent about whether love drug is an appropriate term; I use it in my own writing as shorthand & have a chapter explaining why & in what sense
Any drug that alters mood will have an addition potential (esp when associated with psychological reinforcements). Dependence isn't usually found via RCTs but from case reports of abuse & then standard surveys about escalation/ cravings etc
On some views anything that is subjectively rewarding has addiction potential, including sex and food. In clinical settings with controlled doses MDMA appears to have lower addiction potential than many common medicines. Psychedelics like psilocybin even lower addiction potential
