Oh my ... I really did not expect such an outpouring. I am really moved by everyone’s support & kind words. It’s hard 2 maintain perspective on this peculiar platform ... I am grateful 2 you all. I’ll try sharing articles etc. again; tho still wary of ‘debating’ for a while! 🙈https://twitter.com/briandavidearp/status/1056890594835001345 …

Folks, I think I’ll step away from twitter for a while. The norms of accepted discourse even among academics seem to allow for a degree of meanspiritedness, mockery, point scoring, snideness, etc it’s taken its toll. I’ve met a lot of really kind people on here. Wish you all well

It appears I have gained more followers by leaving Twitter than most other actions I have taken on this site. I suppose I will have to reflect on the significance of that 😳

i liked your sokal thread (wasn't entirely sold on it) but then went from there to reading your some of your articles and am now a huge fan. moral is: there's lots of people who appreciate your stuff who won't comment but who should be factored into your perspective of twitter

Debating online is a minefield. Just posting thoughtful articles is much more productive and less stressful .

It can be good to take a break now and then. Twitter debates can be exhausting for academics. But you would really be missed if you stayed away. I don't always agree with you, but I appreciate your contributions very much!

It's not a good platform for debate. My policy is not to disagree directly, at most ask questions to understand better. Also, don't hate retweet, it amplifies the stupidest ideas.
