I'm a centrist: I hold some conservative views and some liberal views. But I'm more afraid of talking to my liberal friends about my conservative views than I am talking to my conservative friends about my liberal views.

My goal as a professor in a philosophy course is to make people less afraid of disagreeing with one another, and to teach them to have conversations where the goal of <understanding your interlocutors perspective> is more important than <proving that yours is the correct one>

Admirable goal! And much needed in today's polarized media climate. 😊

You should read The Righteous Mind by @JonHaidt ... will help you frame the conversation and understand the underlying differences #civildiscourse

I LOVED it. It was illuminating and so timely in today's sociopolitical climate. Currently reading Moral Tribes by Joshua Greene!

Don't do it! You will become too certain about utilitarianism and people will find you insufferable 😟

Don't worry! if you get too tempted by Greene's arguments you can read this paper by @JimACEverett, Guy Kahane, me & et al as an antidote :) http://www.jimaceverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Kahane-Everett-et-al.-2018-Psychological-Review-2D-Model-Utilitarian-Psychology.pdf …

This was a fantastic paper. The tendency to agree with impartial beneficence and sacrificial harm are separate - that stuck with me. Dual process theory asside, my personal experience is that utilitarians are systemizers and use more deliberative reasoning in IRL moral decisions
