A very interesting and thoughtful thread response to the Pluckrose/Lindsay/Boghossian hoax. I have two main objections: (1) most people aren't (& can't be) professional hoaxers who just hoax all disciplines. Of necessity, they choose one. I'm not surprised, as Brian seems to be,https://twitter.com/briandavidearp/status/1047670903197372417 …

@jessesingal is writing a book on the replication crisis in psych, which will deal with some of those problems.) I also know that medical journals/organisations can produce ideologically motivated garbage sometimes: see1 reply 2 retweets 13 likesShow this thread -
the AAP's views on infant circumcision (silly, unscientific & blatantly biased: they are quoted in the original thread). But in the case of Grievance Studies, entire fields seem to be primarily based on ideologically motivated garbage. Is there good stuff coming out of such

Thank you, Iona. Yes. I did a thread about this recently. The difference between cheating or making mistakes re: an evidence-based & reasoned system you claim to adhere to & saying that we don't need evidence and reason at all & should go with other ways of knowing.

Accurate. There's little need to "hoax" a field that can adjust itself by the usual methods. It's only when they block all possible criticism that drastic measures are necessary.

I agree that there is a lot of "you're not allowed to criticize X" stuff in the fields in question, and when you get too far into that territory, it's true that the whole system starts to fall apart. I can see where you're coming from on that
