In this work, we suggest that most work on utilitarianism in psychology using trolley dilemmas has focused just on instrumental harm (IH) and ignored the positive, altruistic core of utilitarianism (impartial beneficence: IB). (5/13)

These dimensions are theoretically dissociable, leading to what we call the two-dimensional (2D) model of utilitarian psychology. This treats utilitarian moral decision-making as a matter of degree, and as involving two largely independent ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ dimensions(6)

Importantly, they're also empirically dissociable, which we show with our development and use of the new Oxford Utilitarianism Scale (OUS). (7/13)

Impartial Beneficence is associated with empathic concern, identification with whole humanity, religiosity, & concern for future generations. Instrumental Harm is associated with sub-clinical psychopathy, lower empathic concern, & higher social conservatism. (8/13)

Interestingly, while these two dimensions were independent in the lay population they were closely associated in a sample of moral philosophers, suggesting that philosophical training leads to coherence in these initially dissociable views. (9/13)

As far as we know, the OUS is already being translated and used in five different languages, and our 2D model has already formed the basis of new work with
@mollycrockett on person perception from impartial beneficence and instrumental harm (http://www.jimaceverett.com/publications/cost-of-being-consequentialist/ …) (10/13)1 reply 1 retweet 5 likesShow this thread -
