Markdown on Visual Studio Code or Atom is very nice, & both programs have plugins for autocompletion of a BibTex database managed by Zotero. Atom even has a plugin with direct hooks to Zotero, IIRC.

Oh! Thanks for the recommendation

I much prefer to use Markdown, but you can use the BetterBibTeX plugin in Zotero to get a Zotero citation picker you can call from anywhere (including in Scrivener) to insert scannable cites for the Zotero ODF Scan plugin.

You mean without a dedicated plugin for the specific text editor? How?

Wow, that's great! Thanks, I'd been using BBT for years & I didn't know this was possible.

Currently working on a piece about how to use Zotero and Scrivener for academic writing. It’s a bit of a hack, but it works. Personally, Scrivener’s advantage for long form writing vastly outweighed the slight hassle of an extra step for references.

Try Ulysses. I love it like no other piece of software.
