I keep having this experience: I’m in some European country, a local person bumps into me by accident, and reflexively says “sorry” - in English. Is this because I am visibly American & they are doing me a linguistic courtesy; or has “sorry” become internationalese?

I'm not sure why--maybe the Oxford affiliation--but I too had no idea you were American! I definitely thought you were European.
