Is mocking compatible with good-naturedness? I can see maybe ‘teasing’ is ... but I also often feel the thing one is trying to accomplish even with ‘friendly’ teasing could be done more lovingly and effectively in a more straightforward, less (superficially) stinging way

I see what you mean. My distinction between the 2 is more blurry, probably reflecting how I take these things. I think I can appreciate some stinginess in a relationship. Of course, one has to tune oneself to the sensibility of the other person.
