Jewish people have the right to circumcise their children.

I don't agree with collapsing the distinction between FGM and male circumcision.

I assume you have not read any of my articles on the subject, then? Here are some that address the distinctions and similarities in great detail: https://www.dovepress.com/female-genital-mutilation-and-male-circumcision-toward-an-autonomy-bas-peer-reviewed-article-MB …; https://www.researchgate.net/publication/316527677_Gender_and_genital_cutting_a_new_paradigm …; https://www.researchgate.net/publication/316505694_Reason_and_paradox_in_medical_and_family_law_shaping_children%27s_bodies …;https://www.researchgate.net/publication/266971287_Female_genital_mutilation_FGM_and_male_circumcision_Should_there_be_a_separate_ethical_discourse …

No worries - it's a subject I came to by accident some years ago, and before that it wasn't something I really thought about much. Since then, though, I've realized that a lot of my initial assumptions were not tenable

How would you address the concerns of Jewish parents that a key tenet of their religious practice would be violated if restrictions on infant circumcisions were enshrined in law?

There are various ways to respond to this - one way is to argue that children, including Jewish children, have a moral right not to be nontherapeutically circumcised, but that the practice need not therefore be criminalized. Munzer takes this view https://heinonline.org/hol-cgi-bin/get_pdf.cgi?handle=hein.journals/hmax28§ion=4&casa_token=DD7zQVFczmAAAAAA:fY6HxJovsvntHRWYECRgi_27Na4QVy1ClbYRUa3brLtp0wBRSIlHCQO5RsZBQmZxAdynKOxG …pic.twitter.com/MmSc2LnCSe

Another way is to say that, under existing law, nontherapeutic circumcision is already a form of assault & therefore illegal, but that exemptions to criminal punishment might be justified. Merkel and Putzke take this view https://jme.bmj.com/content/39/7/444 …pic.twitter.com/aYLsmul4e8

One more argument - Chambers argues that the most appropriate neutral state policy would in fact be legislation against all non-therapeutic genital cutting of minors https://academic.oup.com/ajj/advance-article-abstract/doi/10.1093/ajj/auy006/4993473 …pic.twitter.com/ddEp63t9kp
