“They’re always coming up with these averages,” Haring said. “‘The average woman can’t do what the average man does. I don’t think that’s a surprise to any of us. But they weren’t told to do this based on averages. It has to be based on individual capabilities.”

Because the unit or group performance is critically a much more realistic measure of military performance then that of the individual.
-
It’s not about the average women though. If you have the same basic standards (of fitness, strength, accuracy, etc) to join, then the averages don’t matter. It mentioned two women passed ranger training, most failed. That’s ok, but no reason for the two who passed to be blocked.
-
To my understanding, the study was not on “the average women”, this was a study on units, with and without women. All the men and women involved had already passed training. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
-
The top quartile of women equalled the lowest quartile of men, then the top quartile of women were adequate for service. no point in throwing out the baby with the bath water. This suggests that women are far less likely than men to be good, not guarantee it.
-
No, the data suggests the exact opposite. Despite women meeting individual performance metrics, unit performance suffers when women are included.
-
not necessarily. Because the units with women included the lower 75%. Therefore if the same study was done with only top 25% that matched the lowest male 25%, there might no longer be a difference between units. The problem is the study doesn't control for diff other than gender.
-
That’s not how I interpreted the article on the study, but if that’s true, I would agree with you. I’m eager to see the full report and how exactly how the data breaks down and what variables were controlled.
-
Agreed! The details are what is needed. I don’t believe women should or should not be in, I just want competent individuals to have the freedom to choose.
