    Brian Beutler Retweeted Nate Silver

There is one coherent strategy to spread Covid to as many people as possible for political gain, and another frenzied, Balkanized effort to mitigate the damage—an effort routinely undercut by public figures who meltdown anytime a vaccinated person is asked to make a sacrifice.https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1432697419033100291 …

COVID policy has become purely ad hoc and reactive. There's no strategy, there's no endgame, there's no philosophy, there's no internal consistency, there's no cost-benefit analysis, there's no metrics to define success, there's no consensus on what we want to accomplish.

There was a time when I had so much respect for this guy. Like Andrew Sullivan, the gilding has flaked.

Hate to say it but kind of agree with Nate here even in places that take covid seriously like here in nyc it’s hard to have confidence in anything we are doing because it all seems contradictory or counter productive

Also a data situation that’s constantly evolving but yes, “infect everyone” is much simpler to understand.

It’s going to happen anyway, there is no point to these restrictions other than to slightly slow the spread, the endpoint is the same.

I dunno about the original poster but eradication of the virus and for metric of success it's reduce R0 to less than 1 and keep it there for a sufficient duration.

Telling Americans not to travel to Canada because of the Covid risk there is not a serious attempt to mitigate anything - it's just a knee-jerk, bureaucratic response to Canada's daily case load crossing an arbitrary threshold, one that ignores vax rates and positive-test rates.

Kind of like the metrics to recommend masking.
