My proposal for strengthening the IP protection of the ECIP process (which is already much stronger than the EIP process: https://github.com/ethereumclassic/ECIPs/pull/162/files … Following best practices of Linux Kernel development and decades of collaborative projects at @linuxfoundation, like @Hyperledger.pic.twitter.com/xYE8bGA3cA

This sounds like a pretty solid improvement. A few additional thoughts: (As always, IANAL, TINL) 1/12

I presume your #1 goal is to protect ETC development from the prospect of submarine patents. The best you can here do is protect your community from the owners of patents who attempt to submarine reqs in the specs, or features in code, that require a license to their patent. 2/12

You can't protect against third parties with patents - that's better addressed through patent licensing pools like the Open Invention Network. You're basically just trying to reassure users that they can trust the participants in the process not to have ulterior motives. 3/12

You're also trying to protect against future Craig Wright style threats, when contributors are otherwise anonymous. This is why knowing who contributors are is important, and having a clear grant. (importantly: not just MIT license, which has no patent provision!) 4/12

This is something we'll have to sort out with Rocket Labs if they want to get enterprise adoption for Avalanche. 5/12
