I’m pleased to present the flame-bait sequel to my previous blog post: “No, dynamic type systems are not inherently more open.” (Please send me your hatemail at your earliest convenience.)

Just saw a sign "emergency stop button" which I somehow read as "emergency soup button" and now I want some of this emergency soup.

I appreciate that the Spanish language puts the exclamation point at the beginning o the sentence. It’s like, “Get ready, this sentence is about to wild the fuck out”

In Spanish, attention is something you "lend", because you kind of want it back. In French you "make" it, because it's not there if you don't. In English you "pay" it, because it's valuable. And in German you "gift" it, because it's really a present. I wish I knew all languages!

In 2016 I had a nightmare $1900 UCSF mammogram bill. So, needing one again, I tried to comparison shop. I’ve spent hours now, calling insurance, calling hospitals, calling other divisions within hospitals. No one will stand by online estimates. No one’ll put anything in writing.

What if... - your programming language required you to write useful docs, - using those docs, it checked your program for mistakes, - it even used the docs to speed up your program, - this feature already exists! And what if it was called static typing.

95% of the time anyone uses the word “utilize”, they mean “use” but want to sound fancy.

A lot of programmers make the mistake of thinking the way you make code flexible is by predicting as many future uses as possible, but this paradoxically leads to *less* flexible code. The only way to achieve flexibility is to make things as simple and easy to change as you can.

It usually takes me a couple rounds of messing with my password manager's secret generation form to get the complexity as high as possible for the given site. This would save quite a bit of time/annoyance and also make users more likely to select complex passwords.

Is there any existing or proposed way to describe password requirements (min/max length, allowed symbols, etc) in an HTML form such that a password manager could read it and automatically crank password generation settings up to the allowable maximum for each site?

An enormous virtue of plain old C is that most senior developers are capable of writing their own C compiler, and knowing your tools at that level is valuable! I would need a lot of study time to write a C++ compiler.

Sad to see Microsoft throw in the towel on their own browser rendering engine. The web doesn't benefit when developers are encouraged to "just test in Chrome" through consolidation. We need a strong, diverse set of browsers. HANG IN THERE FIREFOX!
