History lesson! This is the Preferences app in OPENSTEP, Rhapsody DR1, and Rhapsody DR2 (which comes 7 months after DR1). All three are built with AppKit, and as you can see it gradually learned how to become 'Mac-like' over time. With Mojave's Marzipan, UIKit is most akin to DR1pic.twitter.com/8g0tMg5Xz2

The story doesn't stop there, of course! Because 2 years later, this is what "Mac-like" looked like, as the paradigms shifted. Also AppKit. (For fun: compare and contrast with what it looks like today)pic.twitter.com/mmJalR2ywS

Moral of the story: no I am not worried one bit about UIKit apps on macOS being 'Mac-like'. Both UIKit, *and* 'Mac-like', are going to evolve

The evolution is where I want to have input. If I lose the ability to work efficiently on my Mac, because it’s become a giant iPhone-with-a-mouse, then I will be deeply disappointed. And at a loss of what to do.

And I’m kind of unsure that leadership at Apple understands what’s great and important about Macs that we should not lose. Evolve, change, yes — but not become a supercomputer with its arms tied behinds its back. That’s what I worry about it.

Funny, when we lost Jobs and Forstall I figured it was the iPad that was doomed, because everybody left were the 'Mac people'. Two sides to every story, huh? 😂

Seems like and Craig and Schiller love the Mac and understand it. Couldn’t be the worst thing to have two influential Sr. VPs on board.

I fully agree with you here and Mac/macOS will always be where I’m most productive but unfortunately that’s not for everyone. The world is moving to simplified, instant-on-easy-to-carry tablet computing whether we like it or not. #EndOfAnEra

I’m find with the world moving to other things. But I insist that it’s important that devices and apps for power users continue to exist — because we need them to make the things everyone else uses.

I have no doubt that Apple will continue to make hardware that is aimed at the _professional_and_power_user. Apple needs them for the ecosystem. The question is what form they will take, especially the OS. I get the impression that we're in for a major shakeup. macOS != iOS

Right. But not just Macs. Apple's raison d'être eludes those milking the iPhone cash cow and looking towards "services" as the next teat to suck dry. Google & Microsoft conceded new space to Apple via epic failures, rather than Apple continuing to define itself as tech greatness.

Who inside Apple is advancing our interests? Edy is too busy dancing. Tim prefers iPads over laptops; wants to be hollywood executive. Jony lives in a sensory deprivation tank. Phil and Craig seem to care, but year-after-year "we hear and appreciate your concerns" is disingenuous

I really want to be optimistic, but I feel like Apple doesn’t even do keyboard shortcuts well lately Gives me the same concern about second-rate attention to Mac application and input norms 😕
