it's odd because i kinda don't like it when i say something like "my partner and i are fuckin with the nix config, h/o" and people assume i mean significant other (rather than business partner) and yet i don't know why i care because as it happens he is both of those things.

"Partner" has a lot of functional overloads in 2018 that it didn't have even 20 years ago. It's kinda like how my mom and I view 'girlfriend' and 'boyfriend' very differently b/c it meant different things to her pre-Boomer generation.

i get the feeling that if he said "my partner and i are fixing this", people would assume he meant a (male) business partner if they didn't know, but i feel like if i say it they assume i mean "boyfriend". i think this might be what's bothering me.

Yeah, without a doubt, IMO. It may not be 100% across the board, but the majorities would fall out just like you said, I'd bet.

Same here in Australia - many folks are defacto, so ‘partner’ is a handy term when you want to be ambiguous. But I’m sure there is inherent hetro-bias when trying to resolve the overload with ‘business partner’. 😕
