Genuinely curious if you have an actually-intuitive name for it (which I don't think 'fold' is very much either)

I don’t. I’m not sure there are great intuitions for this kind of thing. There’s not really a metaphor from real life, it’s hard to abstract something from concrete use cases, and the maths terms are all jargon

Yeah, I like fold because it is like you are bending something over itself.

But then 'reduce' evokes something similar in my head…
