I'm sure this is not a new thought, but it seems like ATS would benefit even more from an alternative frontend like Reason than OCaml

Easy to say, but if Reason is any indication, very difficult to pull off without a team.

I was actually just reparsing the tweet about subpar communication skills above and it's interesting that considers syntax design a communication skill. Hadn't thought about it that way before.

I do! But I also think that syntax design is non-zero information about communication skills, even if itself is not one.

Then is the inability to look past it non-zero information about listening skills. Not saying that about you and ATS btw, it's pretty gnarly.

Not sure about listening skills, but might have a relation to attention span / executive function. I have a lot of ADHD symptoms and summoning the willpower to push past unfamiliar syntax to try to understand the code is really really hard. (Not just ATS, also e.g. lisps, alas.)

This is interesting by the way. Your criticisms of that workflow are very compelling to me, but in the *specific* respect which makes e.g. unfamiliar syntax difficult for me, it's a problem type errors -don't- have.

Whenever I make a change, the compiler gives me some feedback (helpful or not!) -- small hits of dopamine similar to e.g. refreshing Twitter -- and it keeps me engaged. It's gameified, so to speak.
