I'm sure this is not a new thought, but it seems like ATS would benefit even more from an alternative frontend like Reason than OCaml

Yes. Definitely wasn't implying it'd be easy.

Not sure about listening skills, but might have a relation to attention span / executive function. I have a lot of ADHD symptoms and summoning the willpower to push past unfamiliar syntax to try to understand the code is really really hard. (Not just ATS, also e.g. lisps, alas.)

This is interesting by the way. Your criticisms of that workflow are very compelling to me, but in the *specific* respect which makes e.g. unfamiliar syntax difficult for me, it's a problem type errors -don't- have.

Whenever I make a change, the compiler gives me some feedback (helpful or not!) -- small hits of dopamine similar to e.g. refreshing Twitter -- and it keeps me engaged. It's gameified, so to speak.

Yeah, I find it helps me keep my place in the face of distraction. Found I've needed my more focus when say, refactoring in Ruby. But I definitely think the ergonomics could be improved.
