looking into a laptop replacement at the moment; does anyone know if the M1/M2 macbooks are generally able to run most software yet? and are they a substantial improvement over the intel models? currently I'm on a 2020 macbook pro with an i5 🤔

they are a substantial improvement. They run everything i need.

You might have trouble running obscure software e.g. for school I need to run Mlton, New Jersey SML, or Chez Scheme, and none of those systems run on Apple silicon.
But 90%+ of the tools I use for work on the day-to-day ran without a problem.

Yeah I run Idris via Rosetta atm which is fine for what I do. Most stuff is ok for what I need!
