it's very strange to me when people complain that "rust is supposedly safe but has memory leaks!". I don't think it's ever pretended to prevent memory leaks?

i do think it's valid to feel that safety ought to include memory leaks (and that rust is failing on providing "safety" because of that), though it's a step too far to say rust is lying, it's just a matter of definitions

Yeah it’s often hard to manage expectations… what Rust helps you with vs. what it doesn’t. And in the other direction, what you can work around. For example people getting the impression memory safe by default means you shouldn’t (or can’t) manipulate memory at a low level.
