this new image gen stuff would be way cooler if the space was tagged with links to the source images, so when you find something neat you could follow it back to the original artists

Not exactly true, it’s just a bunch of pattern matching and every branch could feasibly be tagged with a numerical reference back to the source material in a database.

I don't think these "branches" exist, though. Yes, it's pattern matching, but all images contribute weights to all the patterns.

It will contribute slightly more to some weights than others, which is what you’d go after?
Not saying it’s easy and it will take a lot of data. But, if they can’t do this stuff ethically maybe they need to evaluate if the tech is there yet to properly do it.

I wonder if it needs to be super precise, like as an artist I can’t tell exactly where certain stuff I do comes from, but I can give nods and pointers to certain artists or movements, that inspire me in a work (also things unrelated to art). That’s an important starting point.
The point is to not kick the ladder out from under you and acknowledge how you got to where you were, which is not something everyone does, but I think the ethical burden should be far higher for on people building these systems than individual creators.
