How's compiling Scala on a shinny new M1 so freaking slow 😭
Conversation
Dang, is it slow even running natively? Haven’t really messed around with Scala and JVM stuff on the M1 yet.

It takes like a minute or two to compile 60 files 😭

I wonder if it might somehow be going through Rosetta somehow… say if you happened using an x86_64 JDK somehow? No clue what this would do to a JIT hah. Or maybe the JVM is just… bad on Arm right now?

I will have to check 👀

Rosetta is usually pretty incredibly seamless from my experience (so can be easy to miss)… for AOT compiled projects at least I’ve only noticed it sometimes taking a bit of time to get going doing an initial translation, but once it’s there it seems on par with old x86_64 stuff.

that's interesting--my experience has been that Rosetta is extremely fast. As in, so fast you don't notice it's running because it's hard to tell the difference between native and rosetta. I agree this experience is a conundrum, and I'm interested to hear the answer sometime!
