Yes we put too much emphasis on calculus! Which is not just a problem for people in CS (who could benefit more from stats or algebra) but also deters a lot of potential students who don't feel like they are "math people"

Mild take we place way, way, way too much emphasis on calculus in high school and college. It's purely a vocational skill, it doesn't teach mathematical mindsets (unlike logic or geometry) and it doesn't equip us to be responsible citizens (unlike statistics) twitter.com/GeePawHill/sta…

I did decently at maths in school but always found it a challenge to keep engaged. After getting sucked into PL design via an art project (long story) I learned there was all this wild stuff like type theory, logic, proofs, and abstract algebra etc! It’s all so cool!

All the stuff I learned at school was like wrote learning and memorisation, or puzzle solving, which I know some people like, but I find it far more interesting and exciting when you can toy around with stuff and be creative and explore in a vast, abstract construction set.
