As an illustrator and artist I got into programming with Processing. There is still a some amount of maths but at least it’s connected to visuals and interactive stuff.

I really loved how it started you off in a custom editor thing, which made setup easier and made Java a little less annoying for small stuff, but then had a tutorial at the end that showed you how to use it as a library in a ‘real world’ IDE.

So it wasn’t like you were boxed in if you mastered the tool (even though the depths of Processing are pretty deep), then decided you needed more room to grow.

This also avoided the stuff that is often a barrier to entry – which is setup. I had tried programming a few times before but always struggled with the amount of stuff I needed to configure and get working, and the number of choices I needed to make in order to make arty stuff.
