how do Elm and Rust make their pretty error messages?
is there some libraries at work or is it all custom??

Rust's is built in to the compiler, but there are libraries like ariadne, miette, annotate-snippets, codespan-reporting and codemap that can help do the rendering for you.

As much as I love those projects, the really arduous part is not the rendering.
