I think I learned an extremely important life hack today when you want to consume information from a white paper from PL research academia and you never went through a PHD program / can't understand their greek grammars, check to see if they gave a talk on the paper instead!

That is a good strategy. Sometimes it is also quite useful to look for PhD theses in the area/from an author (depending on if the main author was a PhD student and has finished), which can contain quite some additional material sometimes.

Yeah, this is another good tip! Often theses will contain explanations of the background knowledge written in the author's own words, without being filtered through the editorial process.
