What guides do we have for what not to do when designing modern programming languages? counterexamples.org is the biggest example I can think of. After that, I have to fall back on a small number of individual blog posts such as tratt.net/laurie/blog/en. Any suggestions?

They aren't really that recent, but there are some nice papers on design issues in Standard ML from the 90s:
• “A critique of Standard ML” by Appel: cambridge.org/core/journals/
• “Reflections on Standard ML” by MacQueen: smlfamily.github.io/papers/MacQuee
