Yeah, this is what I gets me frustrated about OPAM coming from Cargo. I get now that I can use switches and direnv to emulate a similar behaviour, but expecting somebody to know that from the start annoying. I had to read a random post on the OCaml forum to learn that.

TBF trying to juggle a confusingly designed nix layer over a confusingly designed package manager was probably always going to turn out like this…

It doesn't have to be like this re. the nix layer, they have naersk for Rust which works pretty well, maybe the impurity of opam confounds things though. And yeah, there were a number of attempts to design approaches to dealing with cargo before naersk so eh.
