Yeah, this is what I gets me frustrated about OPAM coming from Cargo. I get now that I can use switches and direnv to emulate a similar behaviour, but expecting somebody to know that from the start annoying. I had to read a random post on the OCaml forum to learn that.

It doesn't have to be like this re. the nix layer, they have naersk for Rust which works pretty well, maybe the impurity of opam confounds things though. And yeah, there were a number of attempts to design approaches to dealing with cargo before naersk so eh.

Maybe I'll just try installing opam globally using nix like in the discourse thing I linked to
