If I were looking to relocate, I might take a look at the covid case numbers over the course of the pandemic as a signal for how well the gov is functioning. I understand NZ and AU did pretty well.

At least as someone living here, AU got through the pandemic through a combination of being lucky, and the states taking leadership when the feds did not. We're at a real risk of sliding towards authoritarianism and more extreme inequality too.

We are a nation that digs stuff up out of the ground and fuels an ever-inflating housing market. We have bipartisan support for cruel and human-rights violating border policies against asylum seekers, and many *australian citizens* are still stuck abroad years into the pandemic.

I'd be more confident in NZ, but I know they have their own issues with inequality and an inflated housing market that seem to remain unaddressed. At least the politicians don't ignore experts, they have a bill of rights, and their voting system seems more set up for coalitions.
