Have you read the Mortal Engines Quartet? This reminds me of a particularly powerful moment from that series.
It's a post-apocalyptic series of books I read in high school about a bunch of cities that go around eating each other. It's seems kind of ridiculous as a premise, but yeah it has stuck with me for a long time, especially the specific moment I'm referring to.
