OK but honest question from a Jew. Do people usually put all of the gifts under the tree as from Santa, and if so, how do you know whom to thank for which gifts? Or is it only some gifts they say are from Santa? Or does this vary by family?

As a kid some presents were from Santa, and some were from Mum and Dad. No idea how it was decided though. As an adult (with no children) I just give presents from myself – I think Santa is just the domain of parents or the person whose house it is? A bit of fun for adults?

I'll also add that I think the tradition of everyone watching/appreciating (down to shaking the gifts and trying to guess what they were, playing with packaging) was started in my dad's family. They were a big family and didn't have much money, so had to make the most of things.

My mum's family used to be more of a massive free-for-all, and I find it pretty overwhelming and over-stimulating. It's really hard to know how the gifts you gave landed with the person you gifted it to.
