I've seen some cool crates for formatting error messages in procedural macros and things, but I can't remember their names. Any hints? Do they work outside of a procedural macro, too?

there's annotate-snippets-rs but it's not for proc macros

What I really want is a way to create rustc-like error messages from other compilers/interpreters -- not actually a proc macro. Perhaps I asked my question in a strange way.

yeah annotate-snippets-rs is exactly what you want
rustc might even be using it now? Folks were discussing doing that

looks good, yes. thanks! I thought I saw some that use unicode to make things look even better?

Codespan-reporting might be able to help here: github.com/brendanzab/cod
Warning though: I've been struggling to find the time for maintenance. 😞 But yeah, I try to have 'just enough' Unicode without things being too fancy and distracting. Not sure if that fits with your goals.
