What’s your favourite widely-held but totally incorrect explanation of a phenomenon?

I don't know about favorite but toilets flushing in different directions due to the Coriolis effect was the first that came to mind

this one always confused me because no toilet I have ever used has had a spiral action

In America, water is filled much higher in toilet bowls. So the spiral effect becomes more evident if I recall my times there correctly.
