My daughter was frustrated by an activity in a math class where they had to solve as many problems as they could in a minute. I told her this bears no connection to actual mathematics—I’d been working on the problem I just solved for 20 years, which blew her mind!

I could never memorise my times tables (they were so boring), but now I get to play around in a land of logic, type theory and mathematical foundations as part of my job, after rediscovering the beauty and creativity behind maths later in life.

I understand that it might be what is needed to survive the current syllabus, but I do hope for a world where we can give students a true glimpse of the beauty of mathematics. It's a constant struggle to un-teach the horror people have of the subject – it's heartbreaking.
