a lot of innovation is happening in the game engine dev and gamedev space without anyone publishing about their ingenious algorithms and CG techniques in journals.
CS academics think sometimes that no innovation happens in the industry but it's very far from the truth.

I've seen this in other fields of CS too, like PL, distributed systems, etc. Conversely, I've seen lots of disdain for academic research from folks in industry, and hence missing out on a bunch of helpful work as a result. I wish we could all figure out how to work together.

My approach is to just excitedly/madly promote, explain, and connect cool stuff from industry to academia and vice versa, in order to try to make either camp less scary to the other, and hope that it helps make a difference.
I think a big step towards this is tooling and appropriate languages to show the new connections being unearthed. A lot of things are locked up in lingo silos.
