Another small thing that always makes me happy about Israel: There are all of these no swimming zones at the beach. People go ahead and swim in them because rules are made up. Always someone official comes along and yells at everyone to get out, and always everyone keeps swimming

Wait, why are the rules there? For marine preservation or pollution or something? In those situations, I find rule breaking a lot less acceptable.

In Australia we have 'swimming between the flags' on 'patrolled beaches' for safety, as the life guards are more able to track you and can shut things down in case of unsafe conditions (eg. rips which can kill the unprepared). Not sure what the case is in Israel though.
Rips usually occur in seemingly ‘calm’ bits of water which hide strong currents that can drag unwitting swimmers out to sea. Many tourists end up dying as a result 😔

So yeah in Australia at least, if you see a beach is closed, or unpatrolled, don’t swim there, even if it appears safe, unless you are a strong swimmer and know how to get out of trouble!
