I think the move from forums into discord etc is one of the saddest things that's happened for internet communities.
The former had history, discoverability and more open access.
Discord just feels like disposable silos.

But yeah, it's not so great for long term stuff, like I still find myself coming across LtU threads in my searches years later… you don't get that with discord.

When saw that the PL discussions just happen on discord now, my immediate reaction was 'what a collosal loss'

It wasn't super planned to be honest, it just happened that somebody started a discord and now we end up spending time moderating it…
It's handy to be able to pop in with a casual question, and help out people, but it's harder to build up a common body of knowledge over time. It's all very ephemeral, which has pros and cons.

I like the ephemeral nature for small interactions - much like the WFH slack too. It's a good space to chill.
communities probably need a decent old school forum and some ephemeral channel with some good sense around taking discussions from one to the other where appropriate...
