Not sure I'd say 'the web is garbage' but it's definitely extremely complicated now, and far too expensive for small players to build their own user agents anymore (speaking as an employee of company building one of those last remaining UAs).

Like we have it easier because we are only targeting print, which cuts out a lot of the more complicated things a full web browser needs to handle, and with less demands performance wise.

I guess my fear is that in our attempt to simplify we'll also throw out a bunch of the better ideas in the process, building on an even more shaky foundation - I think some next-gen web things are using markdown for example, which I find rather scary to be honest!

Projects like Web Assembly gives me hope at least! It's by no means flawless, but it is a precisely defined, small specification at the intersection of theory and practice which is incredibly cool. Would love to see similar stuff for markup and layout.
