This is a neat article on Plankalkül's (circa 1942-45) interesting two-dimensional syntax. Perhaps a structured editor could make use of a similar notation?

I always think about this with matrices. Linear algebra is used everywhere, but coding up simple matrices can be a pain, and error-prone.
