“Parenthesis” originally referred to the phrase’s role in a sentence—this is an example of parenthesis—but grew to refer to the brackets themselves by synecdoche/metonymy, like referring to “” as “quotes” or # as “hashtag”—for consistency we should go all-in and call [] “sics”
