one of my favourite academic expressions is "folklore", as in "this theorem comes from folklore"
it means "everybody knows this is true but I couldn't find a source for it"

as an outsider to normal academic circles, the existence of academic folklore is a constant source of frustration (I often am ignorant of commonly 'known' stuff), but at least there's a good term for it! 🧙♀️🧝🧚♂️
