If being optimistic about the academic job market was a requirement there'd be a *lot* fewer mentors.

Ahh gotcha! Yeah I wasn't sure if I fit the bill when I read it initially, seeing as it seemed pretty university focused and I'm a uni drop-out so wasn't sure if I'd be a great mentor. Took a long circuitous route to finally lucking out and finding a PL job.
Depends a bit on the mentee, some people really want to talk to someone in industry, some people really want that tenure track job.
